It’s a humid and hot but we are under a jungle-framed sky and feel lost in another time. For this shoot we were brought deep into the Yucatan jungle in the ancient Mayan city of Coba where nothing else but natures pure resources are the canvas to the Coqui Coqui Coba Residence. On the shores of a crocodile infested lagoon sits two limestone towers connected by a rope bridge. The commitment to native ingredients and respect towards colonial tradition and Mexican culture are what embodies the essence of Coqui Coqui.

The music of tropical, wild animals welcomed us as we stepped out of the car and Roberto, safe to say the coolest hotel manager, checked us in to the King Palapa Suite; one of the four remarkable rooms of the residence. Walls were scattered with old maps and botanical drawings. A hammock adorned over a suede sofa in one corner, and in the other a dark wooden cabinet awaited for our luggage to be unpacked. The color palette consisted of a sandy beige, mossy green, and coconut brown; all to which added the vibe of adventure in the jungle.

With the cockerels of a local rooster, we were waken early the following morning; or most likely because we were anxious to meet the genuinely talented and founder of Coqui Coqui, Francesca Bonato. The idea was to style and shoot a couple of dishes & drinks from the new menu that was collaborated with Chef Luis Aguilar.

We headed to the kitchen and it was like walking into a tropical grocery store filled with local & rich resources straight from the Yucatan Peninsula. How Luis chose and composed the ingredients to create a personal interpretation of modern Mexican-Caribbean food was just as graciously as delicious. We were utterly delighted lunch involved post-shoot dishes.

Aside from the menu, photographed the entire location, spa and boutique, alongside another Coqui Coqui Residence in the town of Valladolid. From check-in to check-out, the experience of this pure, elegant, and absolute finesse of a hotel was unreal, as Coqui Coqui always is. However, this time we got to meet Francesca and it was connecting with her sensibility of detail and authentication that inspired us deeply. We have immense gratitude for Francesca, Roberto, Luis, Gina, Niccolò and the rest of the Coqui Coqui team  who made this shoot possible.
